FES Newsletter 11.9.26

Posted Date: 11/06/26 (03:17 PM)

Week of November 9, 2026
Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
Quarter 2 flies.  We have just 12 school days until Thanksgiving break, and then there are only 15 school days after that until Winter Break.  In Nurture Group this week, we focused on balancing that we take ownership of ourselves, our choices, and our work along with not being afraid to ask for help.  Asking for help is brave!  Encourage your child to speak up when they’re feeling stuck, worried, or overwhelmed and also celebrate when they take responsibility and make attempts on their own.

We have our annual vision and hearing screenings coming up, so please take note of the announcements beneath the quote.

FES Health Room Request: The health room is in need of gently used pants of various sizes. If you are willing to donate please drop off in the front office.

FES Garden Request: Clearing out outdoor pots or hanging baskets? Donate your old soil and leftover plant material to our new Viking Vegetation raised beds that our All Pro Dad group helped build! Leave the whole pot for us to recycle, or just dump the contents into a bed if you're keeping your container.  The garden is located just outside the playground fencing.

“Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.” -- Thomas Henry Huxley

Vision Screening HeaderDear MVCSC Families,
Over the next few weeks/months we will begin vision screenings for students.
● Mt. Vernon Schools will be conducting annual vision screenings for students in grades 1, 3, 5, and 8.
Screenings will also be completed for any student who previously did not pass a vision screening
and does not have follow-up on file, as well as for any new students without a current screening
record. These screenings help us identify students who may be experiencing vision changes and
need to see an optometrist for a more complete eye exam.
● Children who wear glasses or contacts will be tested while wearing their glasses or contacts. Please
ensure your student has their glasses at school.
● Parents will ONLY be notified if the child fails any part of the vision screening test and requires
follow-up. Parents will be notified via a letter sent home with their child OR via Parent Square within
10 school days of their child’s screening.
● If you do not want your student screened, you MUST SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST IN WRITING to
your building health services staff. You may be asked to submit an up to date vision screen or yearly
exam results by an optometrist or ophthalmologist dated within the last twelve (12) months.
A vision screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination by an eye care practitioner. If
you have any concerns about your child’s vision contact an eye care professional about an eye examination.
For questions please contact your school's health room assistant or school nurse.

Hearing Screenings

Dear MVCSC Families,

Over the next few weeks, Mt. Vernon schools will be conducting annual hearing screenings for students who:

  • Are enrolled in grades K, 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th.

  • Have transferred into the school corporation.

  • Are suspected of having a hearing defect or who failed their last annual screening.

Children already identified as having a hearing loss will not be screened.

Parents/guardians will be notified ONLY if the child fails any part of the hearing screening and requires follow-up via a letter sent home with their child via ParentSquare. Students who fail will undergo a rescreening in the following weeks. If a child fails the rescreen, parents/guardians will be notified via a letter sent home or a ParentSquare message.

A hearing screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive hearing examination by an audiologist. If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, contact a hearing care professional about a hearing examination.

For questions, please contact your school’s Speech-Language Pathologist.

Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent.  With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers.  And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.  We are working together to meet the state accountability expectation and school goal of at least 95% attendance rate for every student.

Happy Friday!

This week I went into all 2nd-grade classrooms for their quarter 2 classroom lesson on Sense of Belonging. For the lesson, I read a book called Belonging is..., then students worked through scenarios to say whether or not they are belonging or not; afterwards, we did an activity with yarn called a 'belonging web' to visually see how we are all connected. Next week I will start going into 1st-grade and kindergarten classrooms for their quarter 2 classroom lesson.

A ParentSquare post was sent out earlier this week about our Tennis Shoe Assistance Program: Rack Room Shoes supports FES students with a grant every year for tennis shoes for students whose families are financially unable to obtain tennis shoes. If your child does not have appropriate tennis shoes and you are unable to purchase them yourself, please fill out the following form by the end of the day Sunday, November 15th with your child(ren)'s shoe size. Student(s) must attend Fortville Elementary. Shoes will be distributed in November before we leave for Thanksgiving break. Tennis Shoes Assistance Form

Students of the Month

These students were chosen by their classroom teachers for this past month for being a leader with our focus on “Respect” and setting a positive example. We called them to the top of the Success Slide and gave each of them one of the gold tokens for our book vending machine which they were able to use to choose a book to keep. They will also be receiving yard signs for their families if they want them. We are so proud of these great kids and the great choices they make each day!

Student ShoutOuts

These students were called to the Success Slide on Friday to be recognized for something from the week (being a great helper, working hard, demonstrating growth in a skill, etc.)  Thanks for being valuable contributors to our Viking community!

MV Reads: News from the Library

Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, FES Teacher Librarian

This quarter can be full of holiday books, but we took a little break from holiday books this week to read some others! Fourth grade continued a study of Chris Van Allsburg by guessing what was happening to each letter of the alphabet in The Z Was Zapped. Third grade students giggled through The Truth About the Couch by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Liniers while second graders picked their own story path through Endlessly Ever After by Laurel Snyder and illustrated by Dan Santat (this book makes a great gift!). First grade students took a look at the unique way Corey R. Tabor writes and illustrates some of his books like Simon and the Better Bone and Mel Fell. Ask your kindergarten student if they think unicorns or dragons are the worst after listening to Alex Willan’s Unicorns Are the Worst and Dragons Are the Worst. It was a fun week in the library!

"Be a Substitute Teacher" and MV Employment
Fortville Elementary is a great place to work, and we would love to have you join our team.  You can apply on the MV Employment website. We are currently looking for leave coverage positions (teacher in 4th grade, resource teacher, and school counselor) and a permanent building substitute.

And we always need substitute teachers! Subs apply through Kelly Education Services (information below).
  1. To learn more or apply for substitute teacher positions at Mt. Vernon, please contact Kelly Education by completing this Inquiry Form and a recruiter will follow up with you. For questions, please call 800-991-5157, option 2.
  2. Kelly Services will guide the applicant how to obtain a substitute permit issued by the Indiana Department of Education (~$17) and a background check (~$28).
  3. Kelly Services will then share a short orientation video that will show you how to choose the jobs of your choice at Mt. Vernon and how to see the incentive offers.

Help Support FES Year-round
Help our school get a share of the money that many of America’s best companies are giving to K-12 education.  SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall where over 400 merchants have agreed to give a percentage of every sale to schools.  This includes companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc.   Just go to the website and then to the merchant websites you normally order from and help us earn rewards. The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products.

Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000177219 to sign up.  If you have questions about how to participate, reach out to our office.  Once you are registered, invite family, friends and co-workers to support your child and our school.

Parent Resources
To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with our building (this is separate from any other MV buildings).  FES Volunteer Background Check Form

At MV, we have all of our instructional staff trained on TBRI, and we now have a Parent Resource Hub available to our families to access at any time.
