Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
What a great first couple of days to start off this year! We are so appreciative of the support of our families for the incredible work our staff has done to make that all happen. I want to highlight a few reminders as we continue to settle in.
First, unlike in previous years, we have our first Early Release Wednesday schedule right off the bat this coming Wednesday (August 12). Please be sure that you have a plan for dismissal at 1:20p on all Wednesdays this year (except the last Wednesday of the school year).
Our car rider line ran very well for the beginning of the year (thank you!), but please continue to help us keep everyone safe and things moving efficiently by following our procedures to take turns at the zipper merge location, to keep adults in your vehicle, to have students ready to get out of the car as you pull up to the drop-off curb, to pull all the way up to the next vehicle, and to drive carefully at faster than idling speed when you are able to be moving. We do our best to keep students away from the edge of the sidewalk and to cut down on any cross pedestrian traffic when the line is moving so that vehicles can move at a better pace. Unless you are needing to come into the office to take care of something, we request that parents do not try to park and walk students up to the building. You can view our full drop-off and pick-up procedures HERE on our school website.
Also, we again have consumable fees for students in all grade levels, and we will be sending out statements for amounts due in the near future, but we request that you go ahead and pay the appropriate fees as soon as possible. The list of fees and the QR code for e-Funds is included in the flyer.
Immunizations must be up to date and turned in by 9/9/26 to avoid exclusion. Please contact Shanda Jouppi in our office if you have any questions.
And finally, HERE is the link to order the grade-level house color shirts online for students. We know there was a large line at our BTS event, so you are able to place your orders online as well until next Friday.

Notification of Administration: Universal Dyslexia and Math Screener
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Indiana law requires all public schools to administer universal screeners to students in kindergarten through second grade to help identify students who may need additional support in reading and mathematics.
Dyslexia Screening In accordance with Indiana Code 20-35.5, all K-2 students participate in a universal screener for characteristics related to dyslexia within the first 90 days of the school year. Dyslexia is a learning difference that primarily affects reading, spelling, and the ability to connect letters with the sounds they represent.
If a student is identified as being at risk or at some risk for characteristics related to dyslexia, parents will be notified of the screening results and informed of the next steps, which may include requesting permission to administer a Level I diagnostic assessments.
Mathematics Screening (New this Year) Indiana Code 20-32-6.5 also requires all K-2 students to participate in a universal math screener. MVCSC uses the i-Ready Inform for Mathematics assessment, an adaptive online screener approved by the Indiana Department of Education. This brief assessment helps identify students who may benefit from additional mathematics support and allows teachers to better meet students' instructional needs.
After each screening has been completed, you will receive your child's results. If the results indicate that additional support or follow-up is recommended, your child's school will provide you with more information about the next steps.
If you have any questions regarding the universal dyslexia or mathematics screening requirements, please contact your child's school.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child's learning.
Sincerely,
Alissa Lockwood

Every Viking Matters. Every Day Counts!
Regular school attendance is an important part of student success. When students are at school each day, they have more opportunities to learn, build relationships, participate in classroom activities, and be an important part of our school community.
Beginning this year, we are working together to meet the new state accountability expectation and school goal of at least 95% attendance rate for every student. Reaching this goal takes all of us—students, families, teachers, and staff—working together.
This year, we’re setting sail on our Viking Voyage!
Our school is one crew, and every student has an important place in our boat. When our Vikings are here and ready to learn, we are stronger together. Let’s encourage one another, celebrate good attendance, and keep rowing toward success!

Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers. And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.
