Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
What a week! We had a lot of fun celebrating our school and our PTO Walkathon Fundraiser with spirit dress up days and a full day of activity today. I think there have to be a whole lot of tired kiddos after today. Each house was out on the track walking laps (and having fun with bubbles and limbo) for close to an hour on this beautiful morning. We are very thankful to all of our staff for being flexible and helping us shuffle things to run a very different kind of schedule today, and we also want to recognize the great group of parent volunteers who helped with running everything. I'm very proud of our our school community want to celebrate the fantastic total of over $25,000 raised! Way to go, FES!

Spelling Bee Interest Survey
This is for FES students in grades 2-4. If you would like to have your student participate in the spelling bee this year, please complete THIS SURVEY as soon as possible.
Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers. And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.

Important Dates
Last Day of Quarter 1 Friday, October 10th
Fall Break (NO SCHOOL) October 13-17

Happy Friday!
This week, I went into 1st-grade classrooms to complete our quarter 1 anti-bullying lesson. For 1st-grade classes, I read the book "Diamond Rattle Loves to Tattle" by Ashley Bartley. Then we discussed different types of conflict and ended the lesson with an activity where they decided if different situations were something they should tell an adult right away or something they could try to solve on their own. Next week, I will be going into kindergarten classrooms for their quarter 1 lesson. Below are reminders and information about various programs at FES.
- If your immediate family needs help with providing a Thanksgiving meal this year, please submit the form attached to this post. ONLY families needing assistance need to fill out the form, and families with multiple children in MV schools should apply only at the school their youngest child attends. All requests must be submitted by the end of the school day on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 (1:20pm). Thanksgiving meals must be picked up at Fortville Elementary on Monday, November 24, 2024.
- Any student has the ability to request to come talk/meet with me. This week I went into all classrooms to explain where my office is located and how students can get a hold of me.
Upcoming events:
-
1st Quarter Classroom Lesson: Bullying Prevention
- Kindergarten Lessons: 10/6-10/10
- 10/29: Thanksgiving Assistance Request Form Due
House Points Update

These students were chosen by their classroom teachers for this past month for “sticking together” and setting a positive example. We called them to the top of the Success Slide and gave each of them one of the gold tokens for our book vending machine which they were able to use to choose a book to keep. We are so proud of these great kids and the great choices they make each day!

These students were called to the Success Slide on Friday to be recognized for something from the week (being a great helper, working hard, demonstrating growth in a skill, etc.) Thanks for being valuable contributors to our Viking community!

MV Reads: News from the Library
Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, FES Teacher Librarian
As September came to an end this week, I shared books with students to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Students in kindergarten through 3rd grade listened to stories by Hispanic authors and/or illustrators about Hispanic characters and families. Students in 4th grade continued their author study of Chris Van Allsburg with his book The Z Was Zapped. Please encourage your students to be making good book choices in the library as fall break approaches!
Fall Break will be here before you know it! Please check out the Indiana Recreation Guide, 2025 provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Inside this recreation guide you will find State Parks, State Forests, Fish & Wildlife areas, Nature Preserves, Off-road/motorized Outdoor Recreation areas, seven inns, camping, lakes for fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, and so much more. Enjoy!
"Be a Substitute Teacher" and MV Employment Fortville Elementary is a great place to work, and we would love to have you join our team. You can apply on the MV Employment website. We are currently looking for leave coverage teachers.

Help Support FES Year-round Help our school get a share of the money that many of America’s best companies are giving to K-12 education. SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall where over 400 merchants have agreed to give a percentage of every sale to schools. This includes companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc. Just go to the website and then to the merchant websites you normally order from and help us earn rewards. The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products. Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000177219 to sign up. If you have questions about how to participate, reach out to our office. Once you are registered, invite family, friends and co-workers to support your child and our school.
Parent Resources To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with our building (this is separate from any other MV buildings). FES Volunteer Background Check Form
