Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
After a week that saw our first 2 hour delay of the year and the first field trip of the year, we wrap up our Walkathon fundraising and get ready for a fun Walkathon Spirit Week before the final week of the first quarter. I hope you have found effective routines for the school year at this point as those make a huge difference in the success of our students. We are so appreciative of the supportive families we are blessed with at FES, and I want to encourage you to feel free to talk with our staff about questions you may have about what school work and skills practice is most important to prioritize. The day of conferences we had a week ago was just the beginning of what we expect to be a great partnership throughout this school year and beyond to support our amazing kids.
In a related topic, FES is moving forward with establishing a chapter of All Pro Dad, and based on the interest survey we sent out a couple of weeks ago, a day/time has been selected. Please see the flyer below with information about the Launch Party meeting. Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you are all able to enjoy the lovely weather.

Dear parent/guardian:
The legislature mandates that schools conduct one active shooter drill per semester. We want to inform you in advance that our school will be conducting this practice drill within the next two weeks. Please note that this is only a drill, and there is no emergency situation.
This drill helps Mt. Vernon staff assess and improve our emergency operations plan and response skills.
Due to the confidential nature of our emergency plans, we cannot provide specific details about the date and time of the drill. If you have any concerns, please contact your principal or assistant principal.
Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers. And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.

Below are reminders and information about various programs at FES.

MV Reads: News from the Library
Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, FES Teacher Librarian
It’s officially fall, and we have been enjoying reading fall-themed books in the library! Ask your kindergarten student who the leaf thief is in The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming and illustrator Nicola Slater, and your 1st grade student can tell you how we fixed all of the mistakes in Fall Mixed Up by Bob Raczka and illustrator Chad Cameron. Second grade students listened to a sweet story of friendship in The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry and illustrators The Fan Brothers while 3rd grade students learned a little trick about how to tell which pumpkins have more seeds in How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara and illustrator G. Brian Karas. Fourth grade students figured out who the mystery character is in The Stranger by Chris Van Allsburg as we start an author study of him for the next several weeks. Happy fall!
Fall Break will be here before you know it! Please check out the Indiana Recreation Guide 2025 provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Inside this recreation guide you will find State Parks, State Forests, Fish & Wildlife areas, Nature Preserves, Off-road/motorized Outdoor Recreation areas, seven inns, camping, lakes for fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, and so much more. Enjoy!

Help Support FES Year-round Help our school get a share of the money that many of America’s best companies are giving to K-12 education. SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall where over 400 merchants have agreed to give a percentage of every sale to schools. This includes companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc. Just go to the website and then to the merchant websites you normally order from and help us earn rewards. The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products. Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000177219 to sign up. If you have questions about how to participate, reach out to our office. Once you are registered, invite family, friends and co-workers to support your child and our school.
Parent Resources To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with our building (this is separate from any other MV buildings). FES Volunteer Background Check Form
