Week of August 18, 2025
Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
We all survived the first full week (give yourself a pat on the back). And I would say that we did much more than survive--we thrived! Truly, we have had a fantastic start to the year, and we were able to celebrate with our Success Slide for the first time today as a group of students were recognized with our Weekly Shoutouts. We have done these since I have been at FES, but the slide was a great way to amp up the celebration. ;)
Car Rider Line: Thank you to everyone who is doing what you can to help us keep this line moving in the morning for drop-off. We have just about gotten to our target for wrapping up the line (7:32am). We appreciate your assistance in being ready to move forward when you are able, moving at more than idling speed when the line is really moving (especially near the curb by the building), and having students unbuckled and ready with their backpack before getting to the drop-off zone. We have been running around 200 cars each morning, so we really need everyone's help in keeping the line moving efficiently and safely.

From the Health Clinic: Don't forget, immunizations must be up to date and turned in by September 4, 2025 to avoid exclusion. The Hancock Health Department will be hosting a walk-in shot clinic on Saturday, August 16th from 8am-11am. Please call 317-477-1125 for more information.
Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers. And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.

Fortville Elementary School's Body Safety presentation is scheduled for September 11 and September 12. More information will be communicated after the parent information meeting. Below is what was shared about the virtual parent information night:
-
In Indiana, Child Abuse Prevention Education is mandated in all public schools. Zoey's Place Child Advocacy Center is providing the child abuse prevention education for Mt. Vernon Community Schools during the 2025-2026 school year. If you would like more information about the child abuse prevention education that will be implemented at your student's school, Zoey's Place Child Advocacy Center has organized a virtual meeting to be held on Thursday, August 21, at 6:30 pm. This meeting will provide additional information about their program, MBF Child Safety Matters. The program is designed to educate students on personal safety, types of child abuse, and overall digital dangers.
Attached, you will find the parent invitation to attend the virtual meeting on Thursday, August 21, at 6:30 p.m. For parents who are unable to participate virtually, a recorded session will be available for your review.
-
Fortville Area Resource Mission (FARM) provides weekend food bags to families who are in financial need of getting more food. If you would like to sign up for this, please use this link.
- Please note that by signing up for this, you are agreeing that your student will bring these bags home weekly, in their backpacks.
- If you are in need of connecting with any financial assistance - including how to apply for Free and Reduced Lunches - please reach out and I can see what resources FES can share.
- Any student has the ability to request to come talk/meet with me. This week I went into all classrooms to explain where my office is located and how students can get a hold of me.
Upcoming events:
- 1st Quarter Classroom Lesson: Bullying Prevention
- Week of September 8th: Body Safety Presentations
House Points Update
These students were called to the Success Slide on Friday to be recognized for something from the week (being a great helper, working hard, demonstrating growth in a skill, etc.) Thanks for being valuable contributors to our Viking community!

MV Reads: News from the Library
Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, FES Teacher Librarian
“When in doubt, go to the library.”
- Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling
It’s been so exciting to meet with classes in our new library! I’m thrilled to be back for my third year as the Teacher-Librarian at FES as I welcome students into our new space. Before joining FES, I taught English for 16 years at MVHS. I’m also excited to welcome Mrs. Chyla Millard to the library this year as our library assistant. We’ve been having fun seeing familiar faces in the library and welcoming our new friends. Right now we are focusing on how we behave in the library, where everything is in our new library space, and how we treat library books. Students will begin checking out books on their third visit to the library. You can help encourage a lifelong love of reading by asking your child what library book(s) came home on library day!
"Be a Substitute Teacher" and MV Employment Fortville Elementary is a great place to work, and we would love to have you join our team. You can apply on the MV Employment website. We are not currently looking for any other positions.
And we always need substitute teachers! Subs apply through Kelly Education Services (information below).
- To learn more or apply for substitute teacher positions at Mt. Vernon, please contact Kelly Education by completing this Inquiry Form and a recruiter will follow up with you. For questions, please call 800-991-5157, option 2.
- Kelly Services will guide the applicant how to obtain a substitute permit issued by the Indiana Department of Education (~$17) and a background check (~$28).
- Kelly Services will then share a short orientation video that will show you how to choose the jobs of your choice at Mt. Vernon and how to see the incentive offers.
Parent Resources To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with our building (this is separate from any other MV buildings). FES Volunteer Background Check Form
At MV, we have all of our instructional staff trained on TBRI, and we now have a Parent Resource Hub available to our families to access at any time. Webinars on support and advocacy for parents of High ability students. https://nagc.org/page/webinars
