Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
Another full week of activity leaves us with only 8 days left in the school year. It was a significant day celebrating the nearing of completion of our new home with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony, and it was a joy to be able to share the Sneak Peek Open Houses with so many of our families on Thursday. While it is never the building that makes the school, I am so grateful that our new home will be a place of beauty and full of connections to nature and our community in addition to being safe and highly collaborative. Our Back-to-School event on August 4 will be the official "grand opening" with all our staff, students, and families, and there is a lot still to get done (including the actual move at the beginning of June), but it is also very exciting!
Our Wellness club also had their Family 5K this past week, and we had a great group. Congrats to all of our participants and special shoutouts to our top 5 finishers! 1st- Greyson Myers, 2nd- Mason Greulich, 3rd- Mary Greulich, 4th- Elliott Thorla, 5th- Easton Etherington

MV Summer School
With the changes in state law related to IREAD-3 that went into effect this school year, MV has decided to change the structure of summer school. Unfortunately, there will be no elective "jumpstart" summer school option for families as we have been able to offer in the past. Summer school will be more reading intervention focused in the first couple of weeks in June and will only be for students currently in 2nd and 3rd grade who were contacted based on IREAD-3 scores this spring.
Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers. And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.

Happy Friday, everyone!! This past week, I shared a lesson with some students on conflict resolution. In this lesson, students listened to a story, “Shubert’s BIG Voice”, the story of a little bug who learns how to use his "BIG voice" — not to yell or be loud, but to assertively and respectfully express his feelings and needs. In this book, Shubert discovers that his voice has power as Benny, the class bully, responds to Shubert using his “I-Statements”. With guidance, he learns to manage his emotions and solve problems using his voice instead of resorting to hurtful or unkind behavior.
Following the story, we talked about using our “I-Statements” when someone does something we may not like, and what we wish they would do instead. We practiced using our “I-Statements” with examples (ex. someone said something unkind to you, someone pushed you in the hallway, etc.), and walked through the steps of conflict with the Conflict Resolution Time Machine (Conscious Discipline). The Time Machine helps to teach children how to handle hurtful behaviors such as pushing, name-calling, etc. This process starts with the steps of calming and wishing well before trying to resolve conflict. Both individuals must be in a calm state before attempting to resolve their conflict. Both parties then learn the assertive language to communicate their needs to the other person.

These students were chosen by their classroom teachers for this past month for “sticking together” and setting a positive example. We called them down to the cafeteria and gave each of them one of the gold tokens for our book vending machine they were able to use to choose a book to keep. We are so proud of these great kids and the great choices they make each day!
These students were called down to the cafeteria on Friday to be recognized for something from the week (being a great helper, working hard, demonstrating growth in a skill, etc.) Thanks for being valuable contributors to our Viking community!

Help Support FES Year-round Help our school get a share of the money that many of America’s best companies are giving to K-12 education. SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall where over 400 merchants have agreed to give a percentage of every sale to schools. This includes companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc. Just go to the website and then to the merchant websites you normally order from and help us earn rewards. The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products. Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000177219 to sign up. If you have questions about how to participate, reach out to our office. Once you are registered, invite family, friends and co-workers to support your child and our school.
Parent Resources To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with the district. MVCSC Volunteer Background Check Form
