Week of May 12, 2025
Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
On Teacher Appreciation Week, we had so many wonderful demonstrations of thanks and affection for our staff.  I want to thank everyone who took the time to contribute to that.  It was also a very full week of field trips and extra activities.  Our FES Choir and Drama Club did a terrific job along with all of our 2nd graders in the Spring Music Showcase.  We are so blessed to have the amazing Mrs. Seghers sharing her many gifts in leading our music program, and our fantastic 2nd grade teachers are so gracious in their support of this performance.  I also want to thank Mrs. Danforth and Mrs. Bell for their generous work with drama club.  It was a very enjoyable evening.
Another one of the truly fun events in our school each year is the Kindy 500.  Our little racers had a ton of fun, and we had a great group of parents join in the action.  Our Kindergarten teachers really live in high gear in the month of May, and they did a great job planning and executing this event.

As we plan for the next couple of weeks to finish out the year, I do want to ask for your help with volunteering for our Field Day on 5/23 and classroom coverage on 5/28.  Sign-ups will go out tomorrow morning for those.

Finally, I want to be sure to recognize all the students that participated in our school T-races this spring.  We had some extremely close rounds, and I was proud of how all the students focused, persevered, and did their best. Our grade-level winners are in the bottom pic, and the overall school champions were Murphy Bullock (3rd grade) for Addition and Kendall Clement (5th grade) for Multiplication.

And a very Happy Mothers' Day weekend!

MV Summer School
With the changes in state law related to IREAD-3 that went into effect this school year, MV has decided to change the structure of summer school.  Unfortunately, there will be no elective "jumpstart" summer school option for families as we have been able to offer in the past.  Summer school will be more reading intervention focused in the first couple of weeks in June and will only be for students currently in 2nd and 3rd grade who were contacted based on IREAD-3 scores this spring.

Note to Parents Regarding MV Chromebooks
Dear Families,

We want to make you aware of an important issue impacting our school community. Recently, we have seen an increase in damage to student Chromebooks linked to viral social media challenges. These trends often encourage students to engage in risky behaviors that can result in costly damage to school-issued devices.

Please take a moment to speak with your child about the importance of using their Chromebook responsibly and remind them that intentionally damaging school property has serious consequences. Intentional damages are not covered by the optional device protection plan and will result in the cost of repairs. Together, we can help students make safe, thoughtful choices and protect valuable learning tools.

Thank you for your partnership and support.
MVCSC Technology Department
All current and prospective out-of-district/transfer students must submit an application to attend a Mt. Vernon school in 2025-2026. The application closes May 19 and can be found at www.mvcsc.k12.in.us/transfer25-26.

If you live in the Mt. Vernon district (Vernon and Buck Creek Townships) you do NOT need to fill out an application.

Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers.  And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.

Students of the Month

These students were chosen by their classroom teachers for this past month for “sticking together” and setting a positive example. We called them down to the cafeteria and gave each of them one of the gold tokens for our book vending machine they were able to use to choose a book to keep. We are so proud of these great kids and the great choices they make each day!

Student ShoutOuts

These students were called down to the cafeteria on Friday to be recognized for something from the week (being a great helper, working hard, demonstrating growth in a skill, etc.)  Thanks for being valuable contributors to our Viking community!

MV Reads: News from the Library

Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, FES Teacher Librarian

ALL LIBRARY BOOKS WERE DUE ON FRIDAY, MAY 9th. Notices continue to go out to students who have overdue library books and/or fines. Please return overdue books as soon as possible. Parents can pay for lost/damaged library books via MVCSC’s eFunds link.  Click on PAY for Optional Fees, then choose Lost/Damaged Library Books. Exact change and/or a check made out to FES are also still accepted. Thank you for your support in returning overdue books and paying library fines before the end of the school year.

"Be a Substitute Teacher" and MV Employment
Fortville Elementary is a great place to work, and we would love to have you join our team.  You can apply on the MV Employment website. We are currently looking for a Kindergarten Teacher and Library Instructional Assistant.

And we always need substitute teachers! Subs apply through Kelly Education Services (information below).
  1. To learn more or apply for substitute teacher positions at Mt. Vernon, please contact Kelly Education by completing this Inquiry Form and a recruiter will follow up with you. For questions, please call 800-991-5157, option 2.
  2. Kelly Services will guide the applicant how to obtain a substitute permit issued by the Indiana Department of Education (~$17) and a background check (~$28).
  3. Kelly Services will then share a short orientation video that will show you how to choose the jobs of your choice at Mt. Vernon and how to see the incentive offers.

Help Support FES Year-round
Help our school get a share of the money that many of America’s best companies are giving to K-12 education.  SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall where over 400 merchants have agreed to give a percentage of every sale to schools.  This includes companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc.   Just go to the website and then to the merchant websites you normally order from and help us earn rewards.  The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products.

Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000177219 to sign up.  If you have questions about how to participate, reach out to our office.  Once you are registered, invite family, friends and co-workers to support your child and our school.

Parent Resources
To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with the district.  MVCSC Volunteer Background Check Form

From the Technology Department: We're excited to remind you about the valuable partnership between Mt. Vernon Schools and Qustodio! This collaboration provides you with insights into your child's online activities and allows you to manage certain aspects of their school-issued devices at home.

For more details, please check out this ParentSquare post from earlier this year.
