FES Newsletter 4.7.25

Posted Date: 4/04/25 (8:13 PM)

Week of April 7, 2025
Principal's Message from Dr. Edwards
I hope the end of this first week back finds you safe and not having to deal with major property destruction, etc. from the storms.  I was good to see everyone back this week, and we got a chance to meet most of our incoming Kindergarten class for next year during our Roundup events, too.  More often than not in the next 8 weeks, we will be having someone taking assessments, so please take note of those dates.  We greatly appreciate all that our parents do to ensure your student is well-rested, on-time to school with a charged chromebook, and ready to do their best.
Also, it is at this point in the year that we take some time to review data and discuss areas we want to focus on for the following year.  We always like to have a parent or two participate in that process by joining our school improvement committee.  This will require 2-3 meetings at 2:20p on dates to be determined this spring.  If you are interested, please let me know by emailing vince.edwards@mvcsc.k12.in.us
From the Health Room:  We are in need of gently used boys pants in sizes small and medium as well as brand new underwear in sizes small and medium.  Donations are greatly appreciated!

“A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool." -- William Shakespeare

Reminders from IT
Recently, we’ve seen a rise in damaged devices, many of which occurred while students were transporting their Chromebooks on the bus.  To help prevent further damage and maintain the devices in optimal condition for classroom use, please ensure the following:
  • Chromebooks must stay securely in backpacks and should not be removed or used during bus rides.
  • Students should be reminded to handle their devices carefully, making sure they are safely stored and protected while in transit.
  • Staff should check in with students regularly and offer reminders, especially to those who may need an extra nudge to keep their Chromebooks stored properly.

Reporting Absences
Please assist us by being sure to call our office at 317-485-3180 or email elizabeth.thomas@mvcsc.k12.in.us if your student is going to be absent. With state reporting, we have to assign specific codes for every absence, and it saves our office staff a lot of time each day if we don’t have to call to follow-up on students that are marked absent by their teachers.  And please be sure to provide the documentation required for qualifying absences to be marked as excused in a timely manner.

Mrs. Crecelius is out on maternity leave through the end of the school year.  Please contact Miss Natalie Nolting (temporary counselor)  or Dr. Edwards if you need anything.

Happy Friday! Hope you all got plenty of rest during spring break!

I’m Natalie Nolting, and I will be your students’ school counselor for the remainder of the school year! As many of you know, Mrs. Crecelius is out on maternity leave until next school year, but I am happy to be helping out and getting to know your students!

Just some background on myself: I graduated from Indiana University-Indianapolis with my Master of Science in Counseling/Counselor Education in 2024, with my primary hours being at the elementary level. I was at Acton Elementary in Franklin Township (where I live) for my internship, and recently finished covering a school counselor’s maternity leave at Pine Tree Elementary School in Avon, IN. I thoroughly enjoy working with this age group, and I’m very excited to be doing it here!!

Fun facts:

  • I absolutely love cats -I have four boy cats, Leo, Koda, and Loki (2 yrs.) and Simon (10 yrs.)!

  • I have a niece and nephew, Elise (3 yrs) and Jaxson (5 yrs), so a very proud auntie ☺

  • I ran cross country and track for 12+ years (middle school -3 yrs in college) and have coaching experience as well.

  • My favorite music genre is country music – especially Kelsea Ballerini!

  • Originally, I wanted to pursue a career in mental health counseling, but decided to pursue a career in school counseling after working with elementary students because I really enjoyed it!

I will be finishing up lunch groups and coming in classrooms to do lessons, along with supporting the students whenever needed!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the FES office or send me an email, natalie.nolting@mvcsc.k12.in.us – I look forward to working with and getting to know the students and staff during my time here ☺

Students of the Month

These students were chosen by their classroom teachers for this past month for “sticking together” and setting a positive example. We called them down to the cafeteria and gave each of them one of the gold tokens for our book vending machine they were able to use to choose a book to keep. We are so proud of these great kids and the great choices they make each day!

Student ShoutOuts

These students were called down to the cafeteria on Friday to be recognized for something from the week (being a great helper, working hard, demonstrating growth in a skill, etc.)  Thanks for being valuable contributors to our Viking community!

MV Reads: News from the Library

Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, FES Teacher Librarian

April is National Poetry Month! Students in grades K-4  enjoyed learning about Shel Silverstein and listening to several of his poems this week while 5th grade students learned about the characteristics of novels in verse. Next week is National Library Week, so I’m excited to kick off our Battle of the Books Tournament next week with Indiana Library Federation’s Young Hoosier Book Award nominees as it is time to start narrowing down both the YHBA Picture Book List and the YHBA Intermediate Book List to choose our favorites at FES and submit our votes to ILF!

PLEASE PAY LIBRARY FINES BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

Please return overdue books as soon as possible. Parents can pay for lost/damaged library books via MVCSC’s eFunds link.  Click on PAY for Optional Fees, then choose Lost/Damaged Library Books. Thank you for your support in returning overdue books and paying library fines before the end of the school year.

ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE FRIDAY, MAY 9th.

"Be a Substitute Teacher" and MV Employment
Fortville Elementary is a great place to work, and we would love to have you join our team.  You can apply on the MV Employment website. We are not currently looking for any specific positions.

And we always need substitute teachers! Subs apply through Kelly Education Services (information below).
  1. To learn more or apply for substitute teacher positions at Mt. Vernon, please contact Kelly Education by completing this Inquiry Form and a recruiter will follow up with you. For questions, please call 800-991-5157, option 2.
  2. Kelly Services will guide the applicant how to obtain a substitute permit issued by the Indiana Department of Education (~$17) and a background check (~$28).
  3. Kelly Services will then share a short orientation video that will show you how to choose the jobs of your choice at Mt. Vernon and how to see the incentive offers.

Help Support FES Year-round
Help our school get a share of the money that many of America’s best companies are giving to K-12 education.  SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall where over 400 merchants have agreed to give a percentage of every sale to schools.  This includes companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc.   Just go to the website and then to the merchant websites you normally order from and help us earn rewards.  The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products.

Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000177219 to sign up.  If you have questions about how to participate, reach out to our office.  Once you are registered, invite family, friends and co-workers to support your child and our school.

Parent Resources
To be a chaperone on a field trip or to volunteer in the classroom regularly, you must have a clear background check from the current school year on file with the district.  MVCSC Volunteer Background Check Form

Webinars on support and advocacy for parents of High ability students.  https://nagc.org/page/webinars

From the Technology Department: We're excited to remind you about the valuable partnership between Mt. Vernon Schools and Qustodio! This collaboration provides you with insights into your child's online activities and allows you to manage certain aspects of their school-issued devices at home.

For more details, please check out this ParentSquare post from earlier this year.
