ENL Q and A

Q: What is the ENL Program?

A: The English as a New Language program at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation supports our Emergent Bilingual population. The ENL Program helps to ensure that students receive supplemental linguistic support as they are acquiring the English language.

Q: Why does my child receive ENL Services?

A: Every student completes a Home Language Survey (HLS) upon enrollment. If another language is indicated on the HLS, the student is given a WIDA Screener (language assessment). If the student scores below a 5 on that WIDA Screener, he or she will enter the ENL Program.

Q: What do those services look like?

A: Each student will receive an ILP (Individual Learning Plan) based on his/her WIDA scores. Students receive scores in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and these scores help the teacher determine what types of additional linguistic support is needed. Parents will receive their student's ILP in the mail at the beginning of the school year.

Q: I have questions! Who should I contact?

A: Please contact the ENL Coordinator, Haley Frischkorn, at 317.485.3131 x 1668 or haley.frischkorn@mvcsc.k12.in.us or the Hispanic Family Liaison, Elena Nae at 317.485.3131x1663  or elena.nae@mvcsc.k12.in.us.
